Spend four days inside Kenya's two most iconic cultures, sleeping in a Maasai community guesthouse near the Mara, then flying north to learn the customs of the Samburu. A meaningful, community-led alternative to a wildlife-only trip.
Why this trip exists
Most safaris focus on the Big Five and treat Kenya's people as a footnote. We thought that was a missed opportunity. The Maasai and the Samburu are cousins, both pastoral, both proud, both keepers of one of Africa's most resilient cultures. Spending real time with them is a privilege, not a photo-op.

What you'll do
With the Maasai (near the Mara conservancies):
- Welcome ceremony and traditional song
- Spend a day with warriors: cattle herding, spear practice, jumping dance (adamu)
- Walk in the bush with elders trained in herbal medicine
- Visit a women's beadwork cooperative whose proceeds fund the local school
- Sleep in a manyatta-style guesthouse owned and run by the community
With the Samburu (north of Mt Kenya):
- Quick flight from the Mara to Samburu (skip the long drive)
- Cultural welcome at a Samburu village, cousin culture to the Maasai
- Half-day game drive in the Samburu National Reserve to see the Special Five
- Evening fireside conversation with elders about how Samburu life differs from Maasai
Who this is for
- Travelers who've been on safari before and want depth, not another game-drive checklist
- Solo travelers and small groups (best for 2 to 6 people)
- Anyone uncomfortable with the performative cultural visits common in mass tourism
- Photographers interested in portrait work, we'll arrange consent and small payments to subjects directly
A note on ethics
Cultural tourism done badly is exploitative. Done well, it funds schools, clinics and conservation in communities that have lived alongside Kenya's wildlife for centuries. Every cultural visit on this itinerary involves a direct fee paid to the community treasurer, not to a middleman.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1
Nairobi to Maasai community
Drive from Nairobi to a Maasai community near the Mara conservancies (5 hours). Welcome ceremony with song and dance. Settle into your community guesthouse. Evening dinner around the fire under stars.

Day 2
A full day with the Maasai
Sunrise: join the warriors herding cattle to the grazing grounds. Mid-morning bush walk with elders trained in herbal medicine. Lunch at the village. Afternoon visit to the women's beadwork cooperative. Evening: traditional jumping dance (adamu) under starlight.

Day 3
Fly north to Samburu
Morning at leisure with the community. Drive to the nearest airstrip and fly via Wilson Airport to Samburu. Afternoon: cultural welcome at a Samburu village, cousin culture to the Maasai. Evening fireside conversation with elders.

Day 4
Samburu game drive and return
Morning game drive in Samburu National Reserve looking for the Samburu Special Five (reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, beisa oryx, gerenuk, Somali ostrich). Brunch at the lodge. Fly back to Nairobi (Wilson Airport). Day-use room or transfer to JKIA for international departure.
