Very few countries let you watch lions at dawn and swim in a coral lagoon by sunset the same day. Kenya does it with a 90-minute flight. The bush-to-beach combination is our most-requested trip, and the one where good logistics matter most. Here's how to build it properly.
The golden rule: safari first, beach second
Always end at the ocean. Safari mornings start at 6; beach mornings start whenever you like. Finishing with sand resets you before the long flight home, and after days of dust and drives, that first barefoot evening feels earned. Reversing the order feels like starting your holiday twice.

The logistics that make or break it
The magic link is the Mara-to-coast flight: safari camps run you to the airstrip after a final dawn game drive, and by mid-afternoon you're checking in at Diani with your feet in the sand. Book this as one through-ticket via Wilson Airport, separate bookings risk a missed connection with no protection.
The no-flight alternative: the SGR train from Nairobi to Mombasa with a Tsavo safari on the way. Tsavo East's Manyani gate is literally on the highway; you can leave Nairobi at dawn, game-drive through Tsavo, and sleep at a lodge inside the park, then continue to Diani next day.
Diani or Watamu?
Diani is the headline act: 17 km of white sand, camel silhouettes at sunset, kite-surfing, beach bars, and the widest choice of hotels from barefoot boutique to full resort. Watamu is smaller, quieter and sits on a marine national park, the snorkelling and turtle encounters are better, the nightlife is a book on your veranda. Honeymooners split roughly evenly; families lean Diani for the resort facilities.
What it costs in 2026
A 7-night mid-range combo (3 nights Mara full-board safari + 4 nights Diani half-board, flights between) runs $2,900–$3,800 per person. The luxury version, conservancy tented camp plus a boutique beach house, roughly doubles that. Cutting the internal flight and doing Tsavo by road saves $300–$400 each.
