Nairobi National Park: better than you expect
Twenty minutes from the CBD, lions hunt against a skyline of cranes and towers. The park delivers rhino sightings more reliably than almost anywhere in Kenya, plus lion, buffalo, giraffe, hippo and, with luck, leopard. What it lacks: elephants. Go at 6:30 am when gates open; the light is gold and the cats are still working.
Pair it with the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage (11 am public hour, book ahead, it sells out weeks out in 2026) and the Giraffe Centre, and you have the best wildlife day available anywhere within an hour of an international airport.
The overnight escapes
Amboseli (3.5–4 hrs drive) gives you the giants: huge-tusked elephants under Kilimanjaro. Leave Nairobi at 7, afternoon game drive, dawn drive when the mountain is clearest, back by mid-afternoon. Lake Nakuru (3 hrs, good highway) is the gentler drive: both rhino species, flamingo shallows, and Rothschild's giraffe in a compact, forested park.
The Mara question: road or air?
By road it's 5–6 hours each way, the last stretch gloriously rough. Three days gives you one full day plus two half-days of game drives, at unbeatable value. By air it's 45 minutes from Wilson Airport, and you're on a game drive before your road-tripping alternates have cleared Narok.
